LAMBDA INDEPENDENT DEMOCRATS OF BROOKLYN CALLS FOR VITO LOPEZ TO RESIGN FROM THE NY STATE ASSEMBLY AND AS THE LEADER OF THE KINGS COUNTY DEMOCRATIC PARTY
Lambda Independent Democrats of Brooklyn demand that Assemblyman Vito J. Lopez resign immediately from the NY State Assembly and as Chairman of the Democratic Party of Kings County. As reported in the New York Times today, "Assemblyman Vito J. Lopez, the Brooklyn Democratic leader and longtime political power broker there, has been stripped of his committee chairmanship, barred from employing young people, and censured after an Assembly committee determined that he had sexually harassed two female employees this summer."
"Lopez's behavior was not just beneath the dignity of the public office he holds, it was sexist and violent. It demonstrated a clear lack of judgment and character and reveals his complete unfitness for party leadership or public office," said Matthew McMorrow, co-president of LID. "It is one thing for Mr. Lopez to bully his colleagues in state government and the Democratic Party; it is entirely different and immensely inappropriate for a person in his position to abuse his authority by intimidating and sexually harassing young women who worked for him."
Added Carlos Menchaca Jr., LID Co-President, "Brooklyn has had enough and we deserve better. The demotion and censure issued by the NY State Assembly needs to mark the end of a long chapter of corruption and abhorrent abuse of power by Vito Lopez. Our hearts go out to all victims who have experienced sexual harassment in the past. Our only solace comes when we join forces to elect new leadership that proudly represents the growing progressive movement in Brooklyn which calls for transparent and inclusive leadership, the kind of leadership thatrespects young people and inspires them to work in public service as agents of positive change in their community"
There is no place for Vito Lopez in government or the Democratic Party. He must resign.
